Laser Physics & Safety- Core of Knowledge- Level 4

This four module course covers relevant technical knowledge requirements, standards and regulations governing laser and IPL use in professional settings in the United States.

Unit One

Understanding Laser/intense light generation and characteristics
In this unit you will learn about the following topics:
• The distinctive features of optical radiation
• Key technical terms
• Understanding light waves, and the electromagnetic spectrum
• How lasers and intense light sources (e.g. IPL) work

Unit Two

Understanding the Hazards and Risks from Laser/IPL
In this unit you will learn about the following topics:
• The principal features of working safely in the laser or IPL Treatment Controlled  Area.
• The principal equipment related hazards when using lasers and intense light sources. 
• How the human aversion responses help to keep laser and intense light outputs below Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) levels set in manufacturing standards.
• The requirements manufacturers have to follow to keep exposure to laser and intense light below the Accessible Emission Level (AEL) permitted in standards.
• The Nominal Hazard Zone and the Nominal Optical Hazard Distance.
• The principal laser/IPL-related adverse ocular effects on skin
• The principles of risk assessment, quality assurance and safety management.
• The main safety features of lasers and IPLs, and why equipment management is necessary.
• The significance of a facility’s safety policies and procedures and credentialing.

Unit Three

Understanding Laser & Intense Light Source Radiation - Tissue Interaction
In this unit you will learn about the following topics:
• What happens to the eye, skin and other body tissue when exposed to IPL or laser.
• The suitability of different wavelengths and pulse structures.
• Different tissue targets which includes chromophores and the appropriate penetration depths.
• Laser & intense light source output spectrums and relevance of beam size and shape.
• Laser beam and intense light delivery systems.
• Common laser and intense light source treatments.

Unit Four

Understanding Relevant National Legislation and Standards
In this unit you will learn about the following topics:
• The registration requirements for lasers and IPL devices under the Food and Drug Administration and Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
• The role of Laser Safety Officer or ‘LSO’.
• Working knowledge of relevant international laser and intense light safety standards, regulations and guidelines.
• Emergency action, accident procedure and reporting.
• The state regulations that may apply to facilities providing cosmetic technology services.
• The role of Occupational Safety and Health Administration - OSHA
• The role of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - CMS.

This course provides the necessary basic knowledge regarding light-based hair reduction. It is intended for Doctors, Nurses and other Medical Professionals intending to use powerful lasers and IPL systems to perform hair reduction programs in a clinical situation.

Light Based Hair Reduction: Unit 1

At the end of the unit the learner should be able to:
1. Understand the anatomy and functionality of the hair follicle.
2 Understand the anatomy and functions of the layers of the skin.
3. Understand the structure and function of the circulatory, lymphatic and endocrine systems in relation to laser and IPL treatments.
4. Understand the possible effects of hormone related conditions on the skin and hair.

Light Based Hair Reduction: Unit 2

At the end of the unit the learner should be able to:
1. Understand laser and IPL energy impact on a variety of skin and hair types.
2. Understand effects on the skin using Laser and IPL for hair reduction.
3. Understand contra-indications and when treatment with lasers or IPLs is not recommended.
4. Understanding Medication / Drugs Interaction in Laser and IPL Based Therapy.
5. Understand how hormone related conditions can effect skin and hair

Light Based Hair Reduction: Unit 3

At the end of the unit the learner should be able to:
1. Understand how treatments are modified for the client’s individual skin and hair types.
2. Understand the preparation of the treatment area for the safe laser or IPL hair reduction treatments.
3. Understand how to prepare for and perform a client consultation to identify treatment objectives.
4. Understanding the necessity of pre- and post-treatment protocols.
5. Understand the need for skin patch tests in the treatment protocol for laser and light hair reduction.
6. Understand the relevance of photography and its advantages when considering laser or IPL treatments.
7. Understand the use of skin cooling including pre-, post- and parallel cooling.
8. Understand the safe operation of laser and IPL hair reduction devices.
9. Understand the importance of maintaining client treatment records
